The Venetian painter Canaletto (1722–1780) painted this view of Dresden, Germany in 1748. The Augustusbrücke (Augustus Bridge) is prominently visible as it stretches across the River Elbe, linking both banks of the city.

PROPOSED PROJECT

Light gently flows back and forth along the expanse of the historic Augustusbrücke (Augustus Bridge) in Dresden, linking the River Elbe’s opposing shores. Dresden has recently been a hotbed of conflict between anti-immigration and pro-immigration factions in Germany. This project is a hopeful and poetic vision towards “bridging the divide” between opposing political forces, as nationalism and xenophobia have been on the rise in Germany and around the globe.
