PROJECT IN PLANNING

A Leap Into the Real World: I’ve long thought that the graphic, camouflage-like bark pattern of London Plane Trees looks like a Paint-By-Number painting that has come to life. When I was about 8, a family member gave me a paint-by-number set with images of trees in a forest. So this is my take on what a Paint-By-Number painting would look like if it slipped through the looking glass into the real world.
This installation is being created in a stand of London Plane trees by applying white vinyl adhesive numerals to the bark of each tree. The numerals will be carefully removed at the close of the installation which will be in place for approximately one month.
A class of elementary school children will help apply the numerals to the lower levels of each tree trunk. The intention is to offer children a unique and fun way to engage with nature, while also adding an interactive element to the project.
Above is a typical London Plane tree in Central Park. I've always thought the graphic bark pattern looks so much like some of the Paint-By-Number paintings I had in my childhood.
Below are a couple images of vintage Paint-By-Number paintings.
